We obtained permission to publish a picture where you can see the atoms in the crystal structure from the University of Birmingham's Nano Scale Physics Laboratory.  The picture was significant enough to be published in Advanced Materials an Processes, the official magazine of ASM International.  Its in our Theory of Cryo page, click on the link and page down.

Pri Show a Huge Success!

2009 PRI Cryo Booth

Our trip to the 2009 Performance Racing Industry Show turned out to be a huge success. We talked with some big names in Indy racing, NASCAR, F1, and manufacturers of racing equipment as well as many grass roots racers from across the country. PRI reports that 38,000 attendees came from all 50 states and 64 countries. Our display included showing the Jay Leno clip, a transmission from our good friends at Jerico Performance Products, and literature from our customers, suppliers, and our technological partner, Air Liquide.

Heat Treating Progress Magazine, the official heat treating magazine of ASM published an article based on the paper presented at the Heat Treating Show by Controlled Thermal's Rick Diekman and Air Liquide's Rozalia Papp.  The article was titled 'Cold Facts' about Cryogenic Processing.

Rozalia Papp &  Rick DiekmanAir Liquide's metallurgist Rozilia Papp and CTP's Rick Diekman jointly gave a paper at ASM's Heat Treat Show.  The paper announced the publishing of Cryogenic Society of America's data base of research articles on cryogenic processing.  The paper also summarized some of the newer research on the process. 

Both Rozalia and Rick are members of the ASM Cryogenic Processing Sub Committee.  Air Liquide and Controlled Thermal are working together to encourage research into why cryogenic processing is so successul at reducing wear, especially where there is no austenite to martensite transformation.

The United States Postal Service specifies cryogenically treated brakes for its LLV postal vehicles.

The Post Office asked brake manufacturers who wanted to sell brake rotors to them to submit their rotors to Greening Labs for testing.  Thirty different manufacturers submitted samples.  Greening did the testing.  Brake rotors treated with our process came in with the least amount of wear.  The second place rotor was made by a famous name in brakes.  It showed seven times more wear than our brakes.
The United States Postal Service now specifies brakes treated with the process we developed.

There is an outstanding article in Industrial Heating Magazine that anyone in industry should read.   Although it is titled WHAT IS GOOD HEAT TREATING? and it is not about cryogenic processing (it is if you consider cryogenic processing heat treating, after all, its all heat above absolute zero.) but is about striving to produce the best product quality possible with an emphasis on heat treating.  Its points go for all production processes and all business concepts.  This article is by Dan Herring, the Heat Treating Doctor.  He has written a lot about cryogenics in the past.  It should be read by all people involved with industry.

Performance Racing Industry Trade

We had a great time at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show.  Our new booth looked great!  One high light was the Lycoming aircraft engine used to announce our progress on getting FAA approval for use of cryogenic processing on piston aircraft engines.  This is being done in conjunction with Victor Aviation, the worlds premier piston aircraft engine rebuilder.

New Processing Plant to Open in California

Controlled Thermal Processing announces plans to open a processing center in Palo Alto, California in conjunction with Victor Aviation.  Opening date is planned for early November, 2008.  This plant will process for auto racing and industry, plus explore uses of cryogenic treatment for the aircraft industry.

 

Research shows cryogenic processing causes elimination of cracks, changes in carbide structure in AISI T42 steel.

EVOLUTION OF MICROSTRUCTURE OF AISI T42 TOOL STEEL

CONCLUSIONS:

1. There is distinctive change in the microstructure of AISI T42 High speed steel during Deep Subzero treatment.
2. The change takes place during the warming up of the steel between 8 and 16 hrs of DSZ
3. There is change in the morphology of carbides. This change contributes towards ‘rounding off’ of the irregularly shaped carbides at corners and edges in to regular round shape.
4. The phenomenon of merging / migration / dissolution of finer globular carbides takes place during the process leading to uniform distribution in the matrix.
5. The micro cracks present due to earlier processing are eliminated completely in the process.
6. The stress generated dislocations at the interface of the particles and the matrix causes diffusion, which is driven by the concentration gradient.
7. The soaking time more than 8 and 16 hrs leads excessive contraction of the matrix thereby preventing any diffusion phenomenon.
8. With the aforesaid changes taking place during the DSZ process, there is improvement in the tool life, which has been experienced by number of researchers.

June, 2008 Controlled Thermal Processing is working with Ms. Debra Smith to help her research into why cryogenic processing works so well on springs. Ms. Smith is working on her doctoral degree at Marquette University. 
February, 2008 Vacuum tubes have been treated at -300oF for years.  We are now getting results on tubes treated at -450oF. The results are even more dramatic.  Look for a write up about the results soon on this website.
February, 2008 Cryogenic Society of America is forming a committee to review articles and research done on cryogenic processing to see if the articles are worthy for inclusion in the CSA data base on cryogenic processing.  Dr. Randall Barron has accepted membership in the committee.  Dr. Barron's research into cryogenic processing is extremely well known and accepted as the cornerstone research on the subject.  Tom Siewert has been suggested for membership and his acceptance is pending. Tom has been with NIST for many years and was the acting chief of the Materials Reliability Division for at least a couple of years.  He also was involved with the NIST study of the World Trade Center collapse.  In summary he brings a wealth of experience in mechanical properties to the committee that would be valuable in reviewing papers. Frederick (Rick) Diekman of Controlled Thermal Processing, Inc. also was requested to serve on the committee and has accepted.
